This, like many other options throughout life, basically comes down to which suits you the best. I trained in Takemichikaikan in NJ and it was an effectively brutal fighting style but due to my physique (I’m a small guy) it really didn’t work that well for me. I’ve studied other styles that worked better for me because they came more natural and they didn’t rely so much on heavy striking. That’s not to say that all styles of MA are going to pretect you in any situation. MY opinion is stay away from ‘sport’ styles such as TKD, etc. What it comes down to is what you prefer, who you’re comfortable with and what you pick up the fastest. Don’t be afraid to try a couple different schools to see what you like. And don’t sign any contracts! IMO any school that makes you sign contracts can’t offer as much as a school that doesn’t. (IMO they’re worried about losing students and are proactive about keeping them through legaleze rather than being an exceptional school.

you want a mixed martial arts (MMA) approach, Bruce Lee tried to tell people this (“Be Water..”) the most effective form is Brazilian (jiu jutsu) along with good punching and blocking and kicking technique (kick boxing) you also want to be able to disarm attackers who have knives and guns (Wing Chun – speed and accuracy) – Find a Dojo with the MMA attitude.
