What is Reliability and Maintainability?
Reliability and Maintainability (R&M) is a facet of Dependability. Dependability is a performance characteristic that affects the availability, effectiveness, safety and the lifecycle costs of systems. The diagram highlights the relationship that exists between various system/equipment characteristics. Dependability is the collective term used to describe the availability performance and its influencing factors: reliability performance, maintainability performance and maintenance support performance. R&M is a Systems Engineering discipline that provides tools and techniques for: • establishing requirements • monitoring design and development • assessing the risk • improving Reliability and Maintainability R&M characteristics affect the sustained delivery of the capability in the field and are major drivers of the cost of ownership through life. It aims to make equipment suitable for purpose by eliminating weakness and making it robust, easy to operate and maintain. The R&M achievements
