Instead of four individual employees driving four separate vehicles to a common destination every morning, a practice known as ridesharing would involve a single vehicle transporting all four workers to and from their shared workplace. A single college student driving to a concert several hours away from campus could also take advantage of a ridesharing program and share the driving expenses with several other concertgoers. Ridesharing, a form of carpooling, puts potential drivers in touch with potential passengers in order to reduce the total number of vehicles on the road. Ridesharing, or carpooling, is not a new concept, but its appeal seems to become more apparent during times of higher fuel prices and a tighter economy. Ridesharing is also considered a more environmentally friendly alternative to single driver commutes in pollution-creating vehicles on overcrowded streets. Many cities encourage ridesharing by providing special high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes for commuter cars c

R I D E S H A R I N G is not a new form of transportation. It is simply a way to move more people in fewer motor vehicles. It is sharing rides… using any mode of transportation other than one person driving alone. It is carpooling, vanpooling, using any form of transit (bus or rail), even walking, jogging, and bicycling. Oahu’s ever-increasing vehicle population and our continued reliance on the single-occupant vehicle as a primary form of transportation are resulting in more traffic, more congestion, longer travel times, and a strain on our environment. Ridesharing is a congestion management tool that includes carpools, vanpools, ride matching services and other techniques for reducing commute trips, whether to work or school. These techniques are geared towards commuters that either don’t like to use mass transit or – because of location and/or work schedule – find it difficult to use mass transit. Ridesharing techniques include carpools, vanpools, cab sharing, ride matching services, and shuttle buses or vans. Virtually every metropolitan area has an agency or agencies that provide these services.

Ridesharing is carpooling. We are starting a Ridesharing Ministry because some of our members cannot always get a ride to church. They may not have a car, may not be able to drive, or may not have consistent transportation. Why rideshare? It is a great way to: • Help someone get to church • Enjoy companionship/make new friends • Support the environment • Save money on gas! • Reduce traffic congestion in our neighborhood and parking lot Please see the Ride Share Map and additional information at the Service Ministry table. Note: this is a voluntary program and is self-service. You may participate as little or as much as you like. For more information, please contact Michele Coleman Sharp at 292-1998.
