What is sea floor spreading and paleomagnetism?
Sea floor spreading is a theory that mid ocean ridges act as divergent plate boundaries, meaning plates at this boundary move away from one another. Paleomagnetism is evidence pf this. Every so often the “normal” polarity of the earth shifts from as we know it (magnetic north pole is geographically the north pole, and magnetic south pole is geographically the south pole) to the reverse (magnetic south pole is geographically the north pole, and magnetic north pole is geographically the south pole). one can tell the direction of the earths magnetic field by looking at the directions zirconium crystals point. If one looks at symmetrical areas equadistant from the MOR, one finds that they match. This signifies the divergent plates are in fact spreading apart.
