SENS stands for Strategies for Engineered Negligible Senescence. SENS is a detailed plan for curing human aging. SENS is an engineering project, recognising that aging is a medical condition and that medicine is a branch of engineering. Aging is a set of progressive changes in body composition, at the molecular and cellular level, which are side-effects of essential metabolic processes. Many of these changes are eventually bad for us—they are an accumulation of damage, which becomes pathogenic above a certain threshold of abundance. An ancillary effort of the Methuselah Foundation’s Mprize is direct SENS research.

The Statewide Education Notification System (SENS) is an information delivery system that provides critical and time-sensitive information from TEA to Education Service Centers (ESCs), school districts, charter schools and others organizations through a variety of communication channels such as email, phone, voice-mail, and pagers. The system works very much like an email system. The SENS message author uses email to draft and send the message. The message is translated from that email so that it can be delivered to participant’s phones (work, cell and/or home), voice-mail, email, and pagers. The SENS is intended to supplement, not replace, local, existing emergency communication efforts and information you will receive from television, radio, and other sources. It is an engineering approach that seeks to slow and then halt aging processes that are the side effects of our body’s metabolic cycles. The proposal originated with Dr. Aubrey de Grey, a Cambridge biogerontologist who has been featured on CNN, the New York Times, New Scientist, Popular Science, MIT’s Technology Review, Fortune magazine, and BBC News. SENS is represented by the Methuselah Institute, which has raised US$3M in pledges towards the Methuselah Mouse prize, a reward for researchers who achieve success in extending the lifespans of laboratory mice. The idea is that radical success with mouse life extension would open the floodgates of enthusiasm for human anti-aging techniques along the same lines.
