When an x-ray of a body part is not sufficient for diagnosis, MRI will show extremely fine detail of human tissue without the use of ionizing radiation. The principle of magnetic resonance imaging is based on measuring signals emitted from “excited” hydrogen nuclei in response to radio waves that have the same frequency as the nuclei themselves. MRI magnets used are 30,000 times stronger than the earth’s magnetic field.
