There are many different opinions, but an accepted definition at Sonic.net is: Unwanted, unsolicited mass distributed messages. Spam is unsolicited email, "junk mail," typically commercial in nature, sent indiscriminately to as wide a target audience as possible. It is a great source of aggravation, lost time, and increased expense on the Internet. The proliferation of spam has a negative impact on the Internet as a whole, on Internet service providers, and on the end user. Sonic.net is committed to fighting the flow of spam. Currently we handle approximately 1.4 million email messages a day, and of those 1.4 million, about 900,000 are blocked as spam! Sonic.net employs multiple strategies for reducing the flow of spam. While there is unfortunately no way to block every single spam, the tools and techniques listed below do dramatically reduce its quantity and make it much easier for our users to manage.  more

Also known as Unsolicited Commercial or Bulk Email (UCE or UBE), spam is a word adopted by the Internet community to describe mass-message postings via email, which can take the form of announcements or advertisements. If you didn't ask for it, didn't sign up on a mailing list related to it or didn't leave your email address on a web form asking for more information about it, it's probably spam. This method of advertising costs the sender very little yet consumes time and resources for both Internet Service Providers and their customers. It has been estimated that last year spam potentially cost American companies $8.9 billion in lost productivity, bandwidth consumption, technical support and other technical resources [Ferris Research, 2003].  more

SPAM is a type of canned, processed pork luncheon meat made by Geo. A. Hormel and Company (Hormel). See Ingredients, The SPAM Story. • How is SPAM made? According to Hormel: ''The ingredients are ground to a medium-coarse texture. Spices are then added to enhance the product's natural flavour. After the blending process is completed, the meat is mechanically filled into cans, sealed, and cooked in a ret ort oven. Upon leaving the retort, the cans are dried and transferred to the packaging area. A caser then automatically unscrambles and distributes the cans into the feed section, forms the corrugated tray, and loads the cans into each tray. the packed cases are conveyed through an automatic code dater and a shrink film tunnel. The sealed cases are then transferred to the storage and warehouse area to await shipment.'' Wow! • Can I trust my health to SPAM? Well, that's for you to decide - but consider this list of quality checks: • Bacteria counts of fresh meat. • Percent of leanness. ...

In simple terms, spam is a marketing email that you don’t want and more importantly, didn’t ask for, although different people have different ideas about what the term means. Unsolicited (not asked for) communications aren’t unique to the internet, some people also receive unwanted marketing mail and telephone calls. The difference with the internet is many users now receive more spam emails than useful ones, with the result that email is being reduced as a fast, effective communication tool. The regulations don't specifically deal with the worldwide problem of spam, and only cover emails sent from within the EU. It is widely recognised that spam cannot be addresses by regulation alone. However, we have produced some general information about spam, and how to prevent or reduce it.  more

The word "Spam" as applied to Email means Unsolicited Bulk Email ("UBE"). Unsolicited means that the Recipient has not granted verifiable permission for the message to be sent. Bulk means that the message is sent as part of a larger collection of messages, all having substantively identical content. A message is Spam only if it is both Unsolicited and Bulk.

SPAM is unsolicited e-mail, often of a commercial nature, sent indiscriminately to multiple mailing lists, individuals, or newsgroups; it is often classified as junk e-mail. Your Unwired mailbox has anti spam filtering available which is switched off by default. When switched on all SPAM will be sent to your junk mail folder. You can also create additional filtering rules to send specific known email addresses or emails with specific content to this folder. To switch on SPAM filtering or create additional filters, visit the 'preferences' section (top right hand corner of the screen) whilst logged into your mailbox from the Unwired website. Click on 'Spam Filtering' under the email section of the preference page.  more

SPAM refers to the same thing over and over again. It originally applied to massively cross-posted Usenet articles, but has been expanded to include most forms of net abuse. It is commonly used to refer to Unsolicited Commercial E-mail, (UCE), Unsolicited Bulk E-mail (UBE), or Usenet abuse such as commercial posts in a newsgroup where ads are not welcome, off-topic posts or cross-posting to more than five newsgroups.  more

• Spam is an unsolicited commercial e-mail (UCE). • Spam causes lost productivity. • Some spam is offensive (e.g. pornographic or vulgar). • About 35% of the email coming to Ames is spam (as of October 2005). Not all users consider all unsolicited commercial e-mail (UCE) as SPAM. Automated methods for handling spam are not foolproof.  more
