What is SPARQ and do I need a SPARQ score to be recruited?
SPARQ stands for Speed, Power, Agility, Reaction, and Quickness. It is a series of tests that is promoted by Nike as a way of standardizing the athletic ability of athletes. There are different variations of SPARQ testing, but in general the tests consist of 40 yard dash, 20 yard shuttle run, vertical jump, and bench press. The scale is set to ~100 points and the algorithm to determine the score is held as proprietary by Nike. You do not need a SPARQ score to be recruited. However, it is becoming increasingly common for athletes to try and boost their chances for scholarships by achieving a high SPARQ score. Gaining strength and agility is a good thing. Focusing on achieving a SPARQ score at the detriment of advancing your football skills is not a good idea. There are many ways to get a SPARQ score, including attending a Nike combine.
