What is storm tide inundation?
Storm tide inundation may occur as a result of a major storm, such as a cyclone, inducing an intense area of low barometric pressure over a relatively small vicinity, resulting in a local rise in sea level. As a storm approaches the land, the increased height of the water appears as a rapidly rising tide. If an intense storm makes landfall at a high point in the tidal cycle, the increased height of the water together with wind-induced wave action can result in inundation at levels many metres higher than the normal highest (astronomical) tides of the year.
