Stress is inevitable—and that is not going to change. But the truth is stress doesn’t just ‘happen’. Stress is a key determinant in health, well being, quality of life and successful aging. Knowing that stress is a ‘process’ is the critical concept and foundation for a comprehensive prescription for stress relief. My coaching helps people learn how to develop healthy responses to the stressors in life. The stress process is influenced by a cause and effect relationship between triggers or stressors: Acute: Life’s disruptions Chronic: Life’s disparities Traumatic: Natural/man made disasters and emergencies Hassles: Irritating ongoing annoyances Major life events: Marriage, divorce, death When we consciously or unconsciously appraise one of these causes as exceeding the capacity of our resources, we unconsciously and automatically label it as a stressor.
