What is surgical debridement?
Wound debridement is a process of removing unhealthy tissue to facilitate wound healing. Surgical debridement is one of four debridement methods. The others are enzymatic debridement, which is the application of enzyme-containing products to break down unhealthy tissue; autolytic debridement, which uses moist dressings to encourage the natural healing process; and mechanical debridement, which includes using force such as wet-to-dry dressings or whirlpool baths to remove tissue. The FactsSurgical debridement is performed using local or general anesthesia–depending on the nature of the wound. The doctor disinfects the surrounding skin and probes the wound to assess its depth. Any dead tissue is cut out, removed and the wound is cleansed. Why It Is DoneSurgical debridement is usually used to remove unhealthy or dead (necrotic) tissue in patients with large areas of tissue damage or those with deep, painful wounds. It may also be used for patients with an urgent need of debridement.Complic
