What is that bubbly white foam floating on my bettas water?
That would be called a bubblenest! The male betta builds a bubblenest in order to be prepared to house eggs, should a willing female happen by. However, male bettas do not have to reproduce with a female betta in order to have a “happy” life. Bubblenest Wow! Now THIS is a bubblenest!! A bubblenest is a cluster of bubbles that the male blows onto the water’s surface. He takes air into his mouth and coats it with a special mucous and then blows that bubble up into the cluster. During spawning, the male will retrieve the fertilized eggs from the bottom with his mouth and blow them into the nest, where he will tend to them until they become free swimming fry. At water changing time, don’t be too upset when you destroy his bubblenest because if you keep him healthy with the basics of good water quality and a good diet, then he will simply blow another one.
