What is that puff of smoke that comes out of the barrel a few seconds after the gun has fired?
The guns have a gas ejector in them that uses 175psi of air to blow any excess smoke and soot out the barrel before the breech is opened. That’s so the gun house doesn’t fill up with smoke when the crew fires the gun and also to prevent any bits of burning debris from remaining in the barrel where they might prematurely ignite the powder bags of the successive shot.
