Sodium – [Chloride + Bicarb] or Sodium + Potassium – [Chloride + Bicarb] CO2 concentration is used to represent bicarb value in the above equaiton. If the gap is calculated without potassium, the normal range is 8-16mmol/L, where as the reference range for the gap calculated with potassium is 10-20 mmol/L.
