Based on last year’s Standard Grant competition (2005/06), here are the typical stages of the adjudication process: 1. Upon arrival in Ottawa, each application is sent out to external reviewers for written comment and numerical ranking. (Applicants are asked to suggest names of external reviewers, but SSHRC is not tied to these–in fact, they often send them elsewhere). 2. When the external reviews come back, the set of applications (including the external reviews) is given to SSHRC adjudication committee members, academic peers who have usually held SSHRCs themselves. Each file is read by at least two of the adjudicators, who score them and add comments. 3. At this stage, based on both external and adjudicator rankings, the strongest applications (usually the top 15%) are set aside for automatic funding and the weakest (usually the bottom 35%) are immediately eliminated from the competition.
