What is the advantage of Social Exchange Theory and Conflict Theory?
Both theories allow one to examine concepts based upon a predefined set of parameters. Such therefore enables the understanding of very complex social issues. For example, Exchange theory is the basis for all forms of barter. Barter includes the making of offerings to shrines (usually located on the perimeter of the group boundary) as well as the offering of one thing of value for another, i.e., gold for service (Keynes, et al). Conflict theory, on the other hand (Randall Collins), provides for an examination of the social system through the analysis of stratification hierarchies. Karl Marx could be considered a conflict theorist, i.e., the class struggle (the conflict between classes) will result in a better society. A society ruled by the masses (instead of the Republicans).
