What is the Anatomical Nomenclature and Anatomical Nomenclature Database?
i/ What is the Anatomical Nomenclature? emap have devised a nomenclature for the anatomical components of the mouse embryo at successive stages from fertilisation (Theiler Stage 01) to birth (Theiler Stage 26). The purpose of this nomenclature is to provide a standardised vocabulary for mouse embryo anatomy as a framework for describing patterns of gene expression and other processes occurring during normal and aberrant embryonic development. ii/ What are Naming Conventions used in the Anatomical Nomenclature? All names are written in singular (e.g.. ‘somite’ is used as opposed to ‘somites’) to simplify text searching. Currently, where there are obvious right/left duplications (e.g.. limbs, somites, ganglia, etc.) only one name is given for the two structures. This will be modified in later versions to allow text mapping of left/right asymmetry. Associated with some of the tissue names (to be extended as required) are common synonyms.
