The New Zealand system is based around the Licencing of Maintenanace Engineers. The unlicenced engineer is paid relatively poorly, but again if the individual has worked for a company for a reasonable amount of time, and exhibits outstanding competence, then they may be paid more. Many people begin in the Aircraft Maintenance Engineering industry either as an apprentice/trainee or as an allied tradesperson, so as an allied tradesperson they then work for a few years to absorb the necessary skills to cross over to the new trade. If the engineer is licenced then the starting salary will be obviously higher as these individuals take the ultimate responsibility for the aircraft being maintained and returning to service. In addition the licences cover a range of engine types and aircraft types, and the scope of the licence and whether the individual is expected to use the ratings will reflect usually in the pay.
