What is the average temperature of a CPU?
It varies quite a bit depending on the type of CPU, but in general the CPU temperature shouldn’t be much more than 50-55C. The exception is with the faster Pentium 4 processors which gave out so much heat that temperatures in the 60-65C range were common. Modern processors such as the Athlon 64 and Core 2 can almost instantaneously switch to and from much lower power usage states when demand allows, meaning they can run much cooler when not fully loaded resulting in much lower average temperatures if the computer is just sitting in Windows (or Linux) not running anything demanding. In those situations, the CPU temperature may be only 5-10C above the inside temperature of the computer case, so a CPU temperature of 40C or less is not unusual.
