Attitude. This is what we’ve figured out so far: Metal is loud and whiney. Play with staccato notes, hard attacks, drop tunings, and lightning speed. Try to show everyone how awesome you are at your instrument while maintaining a sense of anger with everything and everyone. Grunge can be loud or quiet but you still have to complain about something. Use really cheap guitars, lots of power chords and play like you don’t care about anything. Rock has to simultaneously be cool and upset parents. When parents are no longer upset by it, it’s called classic rock. To play rock guitar, play a classic rock song until you make a mistake. Repeat that mistake until it upsets your parents. Continue to repeat that mistake until it sounds really cool and then start a band. Hope that helps.
