Even attaining a Visa might not grant you entry into a different country, but it could allow you to travel to a port of enter like an airport, Department of Homeland Security, and Customs and Border Protection. There are two types of Visa’s that you can attain to make entry into the United States. Nonimmigration Visa, This visa is for someone that is not planning to move to the U.S. but instead planning on visiting the United States. Some of the people that would choose to get this form of visa are Foreign Exchange Students, Athletes, Religious Workers, and someone that is going on a vacation. The other visa is an immigrant visa; these are used if you are planning to move to the United States permanently. To get this form of Visa you have to be sponsored by a US citizen or by a prospective employer that is a US citizen. They will send a petition to the Us Citizenship and Immigration Services to wait to be approved.

In short a passport is a document used to prove ones identity, where as a Visa can be used to gain entry into another country either to live permanently or just to visit, but both are needed for travel to another country.
