What is the best diet for a rat?
Their main food should be a block diet so they don’t pick out something. Serving them a mix means they can pick and choose what they want to eat so they don’t get the full benefit of ALL of the ingredients. Since I have all rescue rats, they would pick through a mix and leave parts of it behind. I have 2 cages of rats that won’t touch Total Flakes! 😮 And that one is rather important so it just makes sense for me to use a block. IMO the top blocks are Oxbow’s Regal Rat, Harlan Teklad / Native Earth, Mazuri. Oxbow’s is rather expensive and some rats don’t eat it (or they eat it for a while and stop eating it). But if they do eat it, it’s a good one. Harlan Teklad (sold by places like www.thecraftyrat.com or www.theratshop.com or www.coldbloods.com) is good. The aforementioned places can get any formula Harlan sells. The first two sell it in smaller quantities up to 33#, coldbloods sells the 33# bags.
