It depends on the way they will be cooked. The heavily flavored with garlic type, such as Sabrettes are best heated in water like they are in pushcarts. Nathans are also heavy on the garlic but roast up well. On the barbecue I prefer lighter flavored franks, Oscar Myer, Ball Park or Hebrew National type. For my taste, heavy garlic and smokey, roasted flavor clash. That is why I prefer lighter flavored franks for barbecue. Here is a little trick if you have the time. Poke the hot dogs with a fork in several places. Then put them in a pot full of beer to soak of a few hours, then put the pot on the stove and boil them until good and hot.
