What is the best ice & snow removal salt or fertiliser?
Salt is good for melting the ice but it is really hard on the nearby grass. Fertilizer…say what? What you want is sand or clay based kitty litter (not the new fancy crystal kind) to sprinkle ON the ice and under your tires. It helps with melting but not completely. What is really great is that it embeds into the ice the more it is walked on, to put some grit in it and make it less slippery. This helps even if the ice thaws and refreezes (the worst kind of ice, damn it’s slick). And put about 50 extra pounds of weight in the back of your vehicle to give you more traction. Ideas: pet food or cat litter, potting soil, cement, sand, a few flats of canned goods…any of these can just be stored in the car over the winter and then use those items in the spring. For snow, don’t forget good old shovel power…it’s good exercise.
