There is more than one question here I fear. It started by asking whether property was a better long term investment than a savings account, but later on the question turns to looking back and knowing that all options had been explored. The simple answer is that yes, over a long enough period of time, property investment has generally beaten the returns from a savings account. There are caveats to this, pick the wrong property, or fail to insure it and it burns down and you could end up losing your money. However, exceptions aside, investing in “real” assets such as property does beat the returns available from long term deposits. However, property is a single asset class, and is fraught with problems of its own, not least is the fact that it often involves tying u large amounts of capital in a single asset.
