What is the best thing about the health care reform bills before Congress?
This will be the first evidence of true health care reform in generations. We’re moving to a better place. What is the worst thing? Beyond providing care to more people, the bills don’t truly provide better care at a lower cost. That involves collective sacrifice by all parties that touch the health care system. It’s heavy lifting. I hope that will be step two. You’ve said more care isn’t better care. Why? More hospitalizations can mean more hospital-based infections. More surgical procedures can mean more surgical complications. More testing means more radiation. More antibiotics means drug resistance. The focus should be on wellness and prevention. What’s new at Dean? Construction has begun on the Janesville campus (a clinic and hospital, a joint venture with St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison). We’re on schedule for the steel to go up by April. It’s supposed to open in January 2012. We’ve seen a tremendous improvement in patient satisfaction. We thought patients wanted a routine physica
