I’ve found that the best thing for pots and containers is peat-free multipurpose compost mixed with John Innes No. 2 – put about equal quantities in a wheelbarrow or on a plastic sheet and mix it with a spade. Or some kinds of multipurpose compost have added John Innes already. Buy the peat-free kind because a) it drains better than the peaty kind which goes green on top and b) it’s better for the environment not to use peat because the peat bogs where it comes from are endangered environments. Use organic liquid compost for plants whiochare not yet flowering or fruiting, and change to tomato fertilizer when they are coming into flower or fruiting, because this has more potash and potassium in relation to less nitrogen, which helps the fruits or flowers to form. If yo are using growbags be sure to get nice fat plumpy ones as you’ll need them to have as much compost in as possible – some of the cheap ones are very thin.
