Because of the high alkalinity of relaxer systems, it is important that the emulsion be of high viscosity so that the cream does not drip or run during application. What is more important is the rheology of the relaxer, meaning how it behaves on application. While emulsion stability is clearly vital to any system, over-stability can be a detriment, especially in the case of relaxers. Emulsions that are too stable do not experience a decrease in viscosity upon shear and produce overly stiff relaxer creams that are unyielding on application.
