What is the best way to paint slate siding?
If it looks really bad, use Kutz-It (a varnish remover from Home Depot) and 00-grade steel wool to clean it up. Wash it down, and use a marble sealer or even a canuba wax to finish it off. It takes a lot of rubbing to get the slate to be beautiful again. Slate is historic. It adds value to your home, when it is polished, sealed, and with a smooth glow. True Value, a major hardware line, also recommends you do not paint it, because paint has a generally poor adhesion to slate.
