What is the best way to start a career in the animation industry?

That depends. The short answer would be draw. A lot. But you don’t have to be an artist to work in animation. There are production jobs, writing jobs, editing jobs, and compositing jobs, to name a few. Within animation you could work in TV, commercials, films, ar video games. Most people in animation, on the art and non art side, are really interested in filmaking and telling a story, in whatever medium. There really is no “best way.” Of the people I work with, some went to school for animation, some went to school for illustration, some for film, and some never went to school at all, although the latter are in the minority. Once you are ready to apply, you need a strong portfolio (if you are interested in the art side.) There are entry level art positions, but all positions require a good sense of draftsmanship.
