What is the Cape York Land Tenure Process?
Unresolved land tenure issues have made management of traditional lands for Indigenous communities difficult and economic and investment issues uncertain. In short, the land tenure reform process has the twin aims of delivering land justice to Indigenous Traditional Owners; and protection of Queensland’s high conservation value lands, particularly in the Cape York Peninsula region. The land tenure process includes the voluntary acquisition of 17 properties (in most cases expired pastoral leases) encompassing over 1.3 million hectares of high conservation value lands on Cape York Peninsula. It was a commitment of the Beattie Government at the 2004 state election as part of a broader $10m commitment to protect the outstanding conservation and Indigenous cultural values of the Cape York Peninsula region.
