The Care Quality Commission (CQC) is the independent regulator of all health and adult social care in England. The CQC inspects all health and adult social care services in England, whether they’re provided by the NHS, local authorities, private companies or voluntary organisations. It also protects the interests of people detained under the Mental Health Act. Before April 1st 2009, this work was carried out by the Healthcare Commission, the Mental Health Act Commission and the Commission for Social Care Inspection. You can find out more about the Care Quality Commission on their website: www.cqc.org.

The Care Quality Commission took over from the Healthcare Commission on 1 April 2009. The Care Quality Commission, or CQC, will function in the same way but will also be responsible for assessing and reporting on the performance of social care organisations. Speaking at a reception to mark the launch of the new Care Quality Commission (CQC), Chairman Barbara Young stated that the CQC marks a new stage in the drive for quality and safety in health and adult social care. “CQC will join up the regulation of health and adult social care across the public and independent sectors for the first time. The public wants good quality of care wherever it is provided and wants care that is joined up. Particularly as the population ages, the care people receive spans sectors and they should have assurance that, no matter where their care is delivered, the services are operating to the same essential common quality standards.
