What is the Community Boreholes Project?

0

The Department of Agriculture, Western Australia established the Rural Towns Program in 1997 as part of the State Salinity Strategy to protect rural towns. The Community Boreholes Project is the first phase of a three-part strategy to fight against salinity. This project is the most detailed study of townsite groundwater conditions ever undertaken in Australia. As part of the project, more than 1000 groundwater-monitoring boreholes were installed in 37 towns throughout WA’s agricultural region from 2000 to 2004. The boreholes were established at strategic locations throughout each town at depths ranging from two metres to about 40 metres, depending on the depth of the watertable and bedrock. Test pumping was undertaken in each town to discover watertable depth and aquifer characteristics and enabled Department of Agriculture hydrologists to build computer generated models predicting the likely effects of townsite salinity for each specific area.
