What is the conscious mind and what function does it perform?
The conscious mind is the critical reasoning and logical part that occupies 12% of your mind. This is where your short term memories reside. When you are awake, the conscious mind constantly receives information input from your five senses. When you are asleep, the conscious mind is almost at rest and hardly receives any information input. In your waking state, everything you see, hear, taste, smell or touch is an information input to the conscious mind. Obviously, since the capacity of the conscious mind is limited, it cannot store the huge amount of information that is constantly streaming into it every waking moment. Therefore, within a few hours after receiving information, it passes it on into the critical filter area. The conscious mind can focus on only a few inputs at one time.
