What is the current legal status of Absinthe in the US?
Absinthe is legal in the US…period. There’s over a dozen varieties available on US shelves presently. The hard part now is overcoming the myth that there’s a difference between what’s available in the US and what’s available in Europe. “Thujone” is nothing more than misguided marketing based on the defunct belief that it’s some magical ingredient that provides some sort of psychedelic effect. Unscrupulous retailers (mostly Czech) are still trying to hype their unpalatable garbage with the outdated claim of having some sort of otherworldly “effect.” In terms of import legality, the only hazard is (other than misinformed customs agents) is the possibility of importing alcohol where US federal excise tax hasn’t been paid. That’s almost a nonexistent hazard. Thousands purchase absinthe currently only available in Europe via the ‘net every day with total success.
