What is the difference between a dagger, dirk, knife and sword?

With the popularity of bladed weapons throughout history, definitions vary but this is how I term each. A dagger possesses a double-sided blade and is primarily used for thrusting with less dependence on a cutting edge. A dirk is basically the same but possesses a small, circle or oval guard above the hand, where as daggers have a more pronounced guard (such as a “T” shaped guard). A knife is single edged and used for cutting and slashing. A sword is essentially a larger version of any of the above. Granted, within the Pagan community these tools are not used for warfare but they still resemble their historic counterparts.
