What is the difference between a leek and green onion?
Both are different members of the onion family. Green onion or scallions, aren’t just young onion tops, they grow more green than a bulb compared to a bulb onion. You can even cut them near ground level and they will continue to send up greens for the cutting. Leeks have a very different taste, quite mild and sweet and their green branching grows opposite each other, layer after layer of greens. They require deep trenching to develop or keep the tender white part. It doesn’t really form a bulb, as much as it grows a white bulbous stalk. You usually eat just the white part as the greens are very tough and stringy.
