What is the difference between a main/central/headquarters library and a regional library?

The central or headquarters library traditionally houses the administrative offices and special collections such as vertical files (magazine and newspaper clippings of historic significance), backfiles of microfilm records and specialized in-depth various reference materials. Destination features such as auditoriums, art exhibit space, meeting rooms, seminar/conference and study rooms are often found in central libraries. Some central libraries have coffee shops, used book stores, puppet theatres, aquariums, and other learning features. Central libraries are generally large civic buildings, located within the downtown area of cities, adjacent to governmental and cultural amenities of the cities they support.
