What is the difference between a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) and Professional Doctorate?
A PhD is a research degree with a theoretical base. It is expected to form a distinct contribution to the knowledge of the subject area and afford evidence of originality through the discovery of new facts or through the exercise of independent critical power. It generally does not have a formal coursework requirement. A professional doctorate is more applied in nature and the research completed for the award of the degree is expected to make a distinctive contribution to the improvement of professional practice. It generally has a one year coursework component and then two years are spent undertaking the actual research. Professional doctorates for 2009 are available for the following program: • Doctor of Psychology Please note that no further professional doctorates programs will be offered beyond 2009.
