What is the difference between a print, poster, giclee, lithograph, serigraph, etc.?
This is the most misunderstood issue in the art industry. If it’s not the one and only original, then its a reproduction. That can be a print on paper, or canvas, or a hand painted “knock-off”, or some combination of the above. A print (on paper or canvas) is called by the name that describes how the ink got on the paper or canvas. Most common are lithographs, serigraphs and giclees. The method doesn’t matter at all if we’re transferring it to canvas anyway, but can matter a great deal when discussing issues of UV protection, etc. Our photos on canvas for instance, are printed with 100 year pigment inks and are varnished for UV protection. Don’t worry, we’ll help you sort out the difference when and where it matters.
