From what I can see a six flags season pass gets you into exclusive early openings where you get discounts for rides, food, parking and other fun stuff on the other hand with the play pass you only pay $20 one time for it and the rest of the year is free.

from what i can see looking at the site (and you got me curious, six flags new england is only 45 minutes from me) the only difference i can see is that the season pass gets you into exclusive things, early openings, you get discounts, stuff like that. for the $20 though i'd go with a play pass. you should check to see if the play pass is available at the park you'd be going to the most though. for example, i just checked six flags new england and they don't have the play pass listed under tickets. might only be certain parks.
