An email account also has its own spam and mail filtering settings. An email alias is just an address that points to another address. An alias does not store the mail. Usually, an email alias points to an account where you can receive mail, but it can also point to another email alias. Eventually the aliases have to point to an email account so that the mail can be delievered somewhere. Email aliases use the settings of the accounts they point to. To use a metaphor with the way the postal mail works, an email account is like a mailbox and an email alias is like filling out one of those cards to have your mail forwarded by the post office to another mailbox.
