For the purposes of your course attendance and participation grade, there is no difference between excused and unexcused absences. You are allowed the number of absences specified on the syllabus regardless of the reason for the absence. Therefore, it is extremely important that you plan your semester carefully. Saving your allowed number of absences for real emergencies is a good idea.
