Buddhism rejected both extremes of eternal-ism and nihilism. Eternal-ism concerns with eternal life or eternal things, while in buddhism we learn that we can not find anything which is permanent. Things change and continue to do so according to the changing conditions on which they depend. When we analyze things into their elements, we can’t find any abiding entity, any everlasting thing. Nihilism claims that there is no life after death, based on a materialistic philosophy which refuses to accept knowledge of mental conditionality. It understands life only partially, so to speak. But in buddhism, we learn that we must consider all conditions, both mental and material. Then we can’t say that there is no life after death and that there is no further becoming after passing away. The teaching of karma is enough to prove that the Buddha did not teach annihilation after death. Buddhism however, accepts ‘survival’ not in the sense of an eternal soul, but in the sense of a renewed becoming. M
