What is the difference between Catholicism and other denominations such as Eastern Orthodox and Protestantism?
In 1054 a break occurred in the Church over the use of unleavened bread in the services and following a series of disputes, the Catholic and Orthodox Churches separated and continued to develop their own differences. Developments in the Catholic Church include: • Celibacy for priests • Introduction of Rosary Beads for prayer by Peter the Hermit • Transubstantiation – Catholics believe that the bread and water/wine used in mass becomes the body and blood of Christ • The concept of purgatory as a place of cleansing entered into once death has occurred, prior to entering Heaven or Hell – which is not actually in the Bible Protestantism split from Catholicism in the 16th Century to become a new and distinct Church.
