What is the difference between classical ballet, modern ballet, and contemporary ballet?

Obviously this will vary between studios, but the way I see it, classical ballet should be your starting point. I believe you would learn the basics of “pure” ballet, and, if the class incorporates choreography, you would learn classic choreography from earlier ballets. (I’m not very well versed in ballet history, though I am a ballet dancer through and through, so i won’t try to slip in any dates) Contemporary, or modern ballet (i believe the terms can be used interchangeably) tends to ‘break the rules’ a little bit, straying a little from the usual paths of ballet.
