Some people would argue that there’s not a lot of difference. The theory is that the Classic and Romantic periods are really the same period. That the differences are so small, and the Romantic composers merely “pushed the envelope” of Classicism, you can’t separate the two. The Classic period, particularly with Haydn, cements sonata form, and the symphony into the musical lexicon. Beethoven makes some changes, e.g., the Pathetique, the Pastoral, The Ninth, but sonata form and the symphony are basically unchanged for the entire Romantic period. Romantic composers are even judged on their symphonies, or lack of, like Chopin. To consider it a single period also answers the problem: in which period to assign Beethoven. Things that did change where the evolution of instruments, like the pianoforte to the piano, valveless to valved, and the size of the orchestra, and chromaticism.
