What is the difference between conscious sedation and monitored anesthesia care (MAC)?
Conscious sedation is anesthesia administered by a registered nurse under the supervision of your gastrointestinal physician. Generally, a narcotic medication, such as Demerol or Fentanyl, is administered in combination with a sedative drug called Versed. MAC is administered by an anesthesiologist or nurse anesthetist typically using the medication Propofol.
