What is the difference between dual layer DVD-R and dual layer DVD+R?
Recordable Dual layer DVD discs come in two formats. DVD-R DL and DVD+R DL, like their single layer siblings DVD+R and DVD-R have two different data write-strategies and subtle differences in playback compatibility. DVD+R was designed for high compatibility but came slightly later then the DVD-R format. Indeed the DVD-R format is more popular because of early adoption which then created greater compatibility as technology was focused at the format. This was not to DVD-R advantage in the dual layer format which because of it’s older strategy was less compatible with double layer DVDs. DVD+R Dual Layer is the de facto leading format for DVD high capacity storage. DVD-R DL is a rare disc now with only one product available from Verbatim product number 95165. Taiyo Yuden marketed a DVD-R DL version but it’s considered incompatible with most players.
