What is the difference between formal recruitment and continuous open bidding (COB)?

Formal Recruitment is more structured and all groups participate. It usually consists of 3-5 days of events early in the semester or just prior to the start of the semester. Continuous open bidding or COB, is a more informal way of recruiting new members that happens throughout the year. Only chapters who have vacancies in their membership are allowed to participate.
